The Fondation Hopale provides amputees with the latest generation prostheses allowing patients to regain maximum independence in their everyday activities.

Tailor-made according to a specific rehabilitation programme, the new technology we use lets you progress towards your goals while under the care of highly specialised teams.

Treatment objectives

  • To find solutions together to alleviate disabling situations
  • To rediscover your lifestyle and your social role
  • To inform and educate you about the condition
  • To adapt your environment
  • To make sure your return home is safe

A 3-stage treatment

Stage 1: Preparing for the prosthesis

As soon as you arrive, our multidisciplinary teams will give you a medical and paramedical examination. An independence assessment will allow us to determine your level of dependence and to organise your rehabilitation programme. Here is a point-by-point description of this stage:

  • Ensure the stump has healed properly
  • Prepare the stump for fitting
  • Joint and muscle physiotherapy
  • Pain management
  • Psychological care
  • Work on independence without prosthesis in occupational therapy
  • Indoor and outdoor physical activity at the gym, in balneotherapy and using the town's infrastructure
  • Relaxation

An assessment regarding social, professional and family rehabilitation is conducted.

Stage 2: Fitting the prosthesis

During this stage we will arrange a review meeting with all the care professionals and your family in order to decide on the initial temporary prosthesis to satisfy your expectations in relation to your life plan.

The Fondation Hopale has a certified equipment design workshop at its Jacques Calvé centre.

Working with the leading international manufacturers, our teams provide you with a top quality cutting-edge prosthesis.

Stage 3: Regaining independence with the equipment

Once the prosthesis has been chosen, the final stage involves:

  • If it is a lower limb prosthesis: Learning how to lock and release the prosthesis and how to walk on it (inside and outside)
  • Learning how to maintain the prosthesis
  • Preparing for the return home with a possible visit to help with layout adjustments
  • Resuming sports activities
  • Trying out new prosthetic equipment depending on your progress
